## Welcome to Our "Theory for Surveying" Class

This class provides a good grounding in least squares adjustment theory and related statistical analyses for use in surveying. Before you can proceed with this course, you must first acquire a working copy of the course textbook, which is described in the class welcome page... The details of the book you need are repeated here to emphasize that you must get the fifth edition, published in 2010: Again, the textbook is "Adjustment Computations - Spatial Data Analysis", fifth edition, by Charles D. Ghilani, 2010, ISBN 978-0-470-46491-5. |

**Please begin by reading textbook chapters 1 to 4**(Introduction, Observations and Their Analysis, Random Error Theory, and Confidence Intervals).

**Also, please study and use the following documents as a guide:**

**Note:**The "STATS" program referenced in some assigned problems can be installed using the "Stats setup.exe" program from your "LSA Course Resources/Resources" folder.

**Problem Solving Assignment:**

## Lesson 2 - Statistical Testing

Note that the "MATRIX" program can be installed using the "Matrix setup.exe" program from your "TheoryCourseResources" folder.

**Comments**- Note: The main reason to build a confidence interval is to see if a statistic from a sample distribution is consistent with the underlying statistical distribution (e.g. the normal distribution).
- This can be done with a hypothesis test also.
